How do we break unhealthy cycles in our families and communities?

1. Commit to a daily routine of mind, body and spirit activities . Self-care is a lifestyle.

Examples:

  • Family neighborhood walk and talk

  • Evening family check-in circle 

  • Mindful Meditation to music

  • Cooking Chat & Chew

  • Zoom Virtual Circle Share and Check-In

  • Create a family gratitude jar

  • Talk about forgiveness

2. Emotions Matter! Create safe spaces for all feelings and emotions to be shared and managed in a healthy way.

Examples:

  • Create/Designate a "calm down" area in your home

  • Create a coping skills jar

  • Start a family journal. Family members can take turns writing and responding

  • Model healthy responses to emotions

3. Words Matter! Include affirmations and family matras into your daily interactions and discussions. Speak positive words and watch how your family will grow.

Examples:

  • "We dream big"

  • "We are valued"

  • "We are stronger than our struggles"

  • "We shine bright. Don't dim your light"

4. Have some fun!

  • Laugh!

  • Play games!

  • Be silly!

  • The benefits of "play": relieves stress and releases endorphins ( the body's natural feel-good chemicals)

5. Engage in courageous conversations about what healthy healing looks like in your family. Address trauma, grief and loss, mental health and other challenges head on.

Examples:

  • Engage in family therapy

  • Create a family wellness vision board

  • Improve listening and communication skills
